The Day of the Dead, or Día de Los Muertos, is a three-day holiday that involves remembering and celebrating friends and family members who have passed away. Families often visit the graves of their loved ones in cemeteries, where they decorate the graves with altars (ofrendas), marigold flowers (cempasúchil), colorful candy skulls (calaveras), poems, photos, and other memorabilia. The purpose is to invite the souls of the departed to visit so they can hear the prayers and messages from the living.
